Comprehensive Testing of Nedwind 12-Meter Wind Turbine Blades at NREL

چکیده
This paper describes the structural testing of two NedWind 25, 12-m blades at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). The tests were conducted under the Standards, Measurement and Testing (SMT) Program in conjunction with tests conducted by four European laboratories to develop a common database of blade testing methods. All of the laboratories tested duplicate copies of blades taken from series production. Blade properties, including weight, center of gravity, natural frequencies, and damping were determined. Static load tests were performed at 110% of the extreme design load for strain verification. NREL performed single-axis and two-axis fatigue tests using businessas-usual testing practices. The single-axis test combined equivalent life loading for the edge and flap spectra into a single resultant load. The two-axis test applied the edge and flap components independently at a phase angle of 90°. Damage areas were observed at (1) the trailing edge, which cracked near the maximum chord; (2) between the steel root collar and the composite, where circumferential cracking was noted; and (3) along the top of the spar between the 2500-mm and 4200-mm stations, where a notable increase in acoustic emissions was detected. NREL observed that the onset of visible damage occurred earlier in the single-axis test.

Aeroacoustic Noise Measurements of a Wind Turbine with BSDS Blades Using an Acoustic Array
Environmental noise restrictions play a role in the performance of wind turbines and the dominant source of noise on modern turbines is aeroacoustic noise produced by the blades. A 32 sensor acoustic array has been developed in cooperation between the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and the University of Colorado to conduct measurements of aeroacoustic noise from a 100 kW wind turbi...

Nowadays, trailing edge flaps on wind turbine blades are considered to reduce loading stresses in wind turbine components. In this paper, an optimal control synthesis methodology for the design of gust load controllers for large wind turbine blades is proposed. We discuss a control synthesis approach that minimises the power expenditure of the actuated trailing edge flap, while at the same time...
متن کاملInvestigations of Flow Field with Different Turbulence Models on NREL Phase VI Blade
Wind energy is one of the clean renewable energy. However, the low frequency (20-200HZ) noise generated from the wind turbine blades, which bothers the residents, becomes the major problem to be developed. It is useful for predicting the aerodynamic noise by flow field and pressure distribution analysis on the wind turbine blades. Therefore, the main objective of this study is to use different ...
متن کاملThe Influence of Eroded Blades on Wind Turbine Performance Using Numerical Simulations
During their operation, wind turbine blades are eroded due to rain and hail, or they are contaminated with insects. Since the relative inflow velocity is higher at the outer than at the inner part of the blades, erosion occurs mostly at the outer blade region. In order to prevent strong erosion, it is possible to install a leading edge protection, which can be applied to the blades after the in...
